using C02 laser difference generation in metal-insulator-metal diodes either from the difference between a fixed frequency C02 laser and a tunable waveguide laser, or from the difference between two fixed frequency C02 lasers plus microwave sidebands. is being used to make highly accurate FIR frequency measurements of stable species to serve as frequency and wavelength calibration standards; to measure frequencies of transient species (including molecular ions) for astronomical searches; and to study line broadening and line shape parameters especially for atmospheric spectroscopy applications. Tunable far-infrared (FIR) radiation has been generated Our tunable FIR source INTRODUCTION Tunable far-infrared (FIR) radiation has been generated with four different techniques: harmonics of microwave oscillators ( l ) , C02 laser difference frequency generation in GaAs (2), FIR laser plus microwave sidebands ( 3 ) , and the C02 laser difference generation in a metalinsulator-metal diode ( 4 , s ) described in this paper. tunable FIR source to make highly accurate FIR frequency measurements of stable species to serve as frequency and wavelength calibration standards ( 6 ) , to measure frequencies of transient species (including molecular ions) for astronomical searches (7-11), and to study line broadening and line shape parameters (12) especially for atmospheric spectroscopy applications. Extension of tunable far-infrared spectroscopy to 7.9THz.

We generated tunable far-infrared radiation by mixing CO(2) -laser,(15)NH(3) -laser, and microwave radiations in a W-Co metal-insulator-metal diode. We used this far-infrared radiation to measure accurately the torsion-rotation transitions of CH(3)OH in the 6-8-THz region.

Sub-Doppler tunable far-infrared spectroscopy.

The first experimental observations to our knowledge of sub-Doppler linewidths in a cell made using tunable far-infrared radiation are reported. A double-resonance scheme has been used, combining CO(2)-laser infrared radiation with tunable far-infrared radiation to observe a sub-Doppler line shape in an excited vibrational state of CH(3)OH.

Tunable far-infrared spectroscopy extended to 9.1THz.

We synthesized tunable far-infrared radiation at frequencies higher than 9 THz (300 cm (-1)) by mixing CO(2) laser, (15)NH(3) laser, and microwave radiation in a W-Co metal-insulator-metal diode. We used this farinfrared radiation to accurately measure torsion-rotation transitions of CH(3)OH in the 8-9-THz region. We also measured the frequency of the aP(7, 3) (15)NH(3) laser transition.

Ultrafast and Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Solids with Small Energy Photons

Ultrashort pulses of intense, coherent, and tunable far-infrared (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) radiation, achievable with freeelectron lasers (FELs) and optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), provide unique opportunities to investigate low energy dynamics in solids. This paper reviews our recent experiments on bulk and quantum-confined semiconductors using such radiation. These experiments includ...
